Switch Believes...

"Switch believes that entire communities would be better places if there was an increased appreciation and respect for small business"

However that respect must be earned. It’s not sufficient for business owners to expect that people will appreciate the fact that they work hard and long hours, that there is often a high degree of stress attached to free enterprise, that their home is mortgaged to the hilt and that the return is often marginal.

Respect should always be mutual – and, in this case, it needs to start with the business owner. If true respect is demonstrated towards the customer, that’s a great starting point for gaining respect in return. (Of course, there are additional benefits along the way such as the development of relationships that are long-lasting; such as the customer singing the praises of the business creating more business; and such as the improved reputation the business is gaining throughout the community.)

Once the point has been reached where that respect is demonstrated, we can start to quietly go about spreading the small business message wider. This happens to a degree, with small business award nominations, but that is usually limited to business owners themselves, it’s a case of preaching to the converted. We need to then get the general public involved and that can happen through a variety of means.

More on that later, but let’s start at the beginning and workshopping within our businesses the concept of showing respect – over and above what would normally be expected – to our customers.....
