What will be your game-changer

Last week, in a conversation with a business associate, she mentioned that a current series of events was a “game-changer” for her business. This game-changer was an extension of her business model and in many cases, was really just “business as usual”, but in a much bigger way.

So, the business model had not changed; she was conducting her business in the same way that she had been for the past 10 years. There had just been an opportunity that allowed her to greatly increase revenue. On first glance, this might appear as good fortune; had she just “got lucky”?

Personally, I am not a great believer in luck; you tend to make your own luck. What often appears as lucky is the result of a strategy that has been implemented in a sustained way, over a long period of time. Such is the case with my associate; she has been working on this opportunity for some years and her perseverance has finally come to fruition.

This scenario led me to ask myself: What would be a game-changer for my business? I have since asked a number of clients the same question and now pose the same to all business owners: What situation would be a game-changer for your business? How can you create that opportunity? More importantly, what strategy can be implemented that might bring about that opportunity that will be a game-changer at some time in the future?

So, this is not about attempting to make something happen next week, next month or maybe even next year. This is a strategy that will set the foundations for something to occur in the future. The game-changer is often the result of vision, passion, careful strategic planning and laser-focussed implementation. Careful preparation will mean that the business is ideally-placed to take advantage of the game-changing opportunity should it arise sooner than expected.
